Today was spent mostly in transit. We had a leisurely hotel breakfast and then
went to the airport to fly to Chiang Mai with a stop first in Bangkok. Each flight was approximately an hour, but we
left the hotel at 9:30 am and didn’t arrive in Chiang Mai til 5:00 pm. The guesthouse I had booked originally
emailed me a while ago and asked if they could change me to a different
guesthouse close by. Instead of a family
room they offered me two separate rooms and sent me some (misleading) pictures
which seemed like an upgrade. When we
got here though I realized that the sink outside on the small balcony is
actually the only sink in our room. We
can shower inside but we must brush our teeth outside! It was a little bit
of a shock coming from the relative luxury of our hotel in Cambodia, but we
have settled in already.

We arrived in Chiang Mai in time for the Sunday Night Market
and set out to find it. We were told to
turn left and then turn right and we’d see it….they were right, it was impossible
to miss! I’ve never seen such a large
market. It went on and on and on; it seems impossible that many people could have things to sell and people to buy them. I had no idea how far it went but in the end we walked the length of it to get
to the outer wall of the city, but we didn’t do any of the many, many off
shoots. There were tons of street food options and
restaurants along the way. After trying
unsuccessfully at a few Thai places for vegetarian options we stumbled across
an Italian restaurant and remembered it was Sunday…family pizza night! We headed next door to end the night with an
order of mango sticky rice followed by two fabulous street waffles (one chocolate chip with Nutella, the other banana with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce!).
